When he was only seventeen, Gandhi understood that using English as an instrument for meaningful purposes, he could help turning domination into freedom.

After graduating in law in London, he went to South Africa and became a voluntary  teacher of English for his people there. Indians who lived there became free and English could continue to be spoken for freedom.

Before being a politician, he was a boy and a young man capable to understand and decide, for himself and his people, and English unveiled itself as the best tool to emphasize his ideas all over the world.

A language is the vehicle for the meanings you want to convey, English is the language you can use all the times you think these meanings are important for other people too, whenever you want to talk about and listen to them.
