Vilayanur S. Ramachandran and Mirror Neurons

Good morning, afternoon, evening,

Giuliana, Mirella, Silvia, Elisa, Federica, Michela, Loretto, Daniele,

as you may already know, as far as uploading photographs is concerned, I'm struggling with my new equipment so that one more image for this page is missing, a few musicians playing the cello.

A few technicians tried to help me, but as soon as possible, the "super administrator" of the blog is going to get involved.

In the meantime, since "mirror neurons" is the subject we are going to talk about tomorrow,  I'm offering you the chance to write here your very short "essays", and you can read the article I have been keeping for years, since the time I spent in Bologna, where I was teaching in a bank.

Even then I was as passionate as I am in neurosciences. I read books by Vilayanur Subramanian Ramachandran owing to whom I felt even more engaged in the subject of mirror neurons, a field that pushes all frontiers of knowledge forward. Evolution has led us to be empathetic.

Do you experience that?

I do invite you to listen to him on the Internet, e.g. when speaking in the well known TED Talks, Ideas Worth Spreading, since he is considered one of the greatest neuroscientists of the world.

In Bologna, I used to spend my spare time beetween trains going to the library in Piazza Maggiore, Sala Borsa, where  newspapers from all over the world were available to any reader.

Also handling newspapers sometimes is part of the training, like the ones written in Arabic, Hebrew, and speaking in English with their readers about the content added "spice" to the experience. So intriguing meeting people in stimulating environments and "interacting"!

Music via photos suits everything as a proper frame. And you should guess where the photograph/s have been taken.

See you in class,

Anna - Coordinator

This theory, according to someone, would prove the origin of the language, because the action of speaking is made of gestures, and our ancestors began to create words seeing the movements of faces and bodies.
Also the empathy would be originated by mirror neurons: the human beings are “social animals”, so they can share their emotions with their peers who make similar actions.
A very interesting research tries to connect mirror neurons with the pathology of autism: this could be a real hope to get a possible cure.

When we see someone grab an object, we understand exactly what they do. This is possible because we have some nerve cells that make us understand the action and its purpose: this cells are called “mirror neurons”.
They are discovered by an Italian scientist, doctor Rizzolatti, about thirty years ago. The peculiarity of his discovery is that the mirror neurons don’t use any interference by passed experience: to understand what is the consequence of an action is possible only by seeing the movement, without connecting it to a real done experience. I can understand that person is eating a disgusting food by their face’s expressions, even if I never ate this food.
